GET INVOLVED FOR THE PLANET

It’s easy to do your bit for the environment.  Get involved with beach clean-up’s, or tap into the resources below to become a Cruising Citizen Scientist!

Marine debris including Micro-plastics are one of the most pervasive global threats to the health of the worlds oceans.

It can kill wildlife, damage and degrade habitats, threaten navigational safety, economies – and through the food chain can even damage your health.

Monitoring marine debris can help track the progress of prevention efforts, adds value to beach cleanups, and provides important baseline knowledge which can be used to initiate global solutions.

The Marine Debris Tracker is a unique way for YOU to get involved in collecting marine debris by monitoring data in your community – or wherever you are (even remotely) in the world!

Did you know Phytoplankton in the sea account for approximately 50% of all photosynthesis on Earth and that they underpin the marine food chain?

Living at the surface of the sea the phytoplankton are particularly sensitive to changes in sea surface temperature. A recent study of global phytoplankton abundance over the last century suggested that global phytoplankton concentrations had declined by 40% over the last 50 years due to rising sea surface temperatures as a consequence of current climate change.

We need to know much more about these changes and you can help by making a simple piece of scientific equipment called a Secchi Disk and using the free Secchi app.
